What is Betaine Anhydrous Supplement (Trimethylglycine)?

Betaine Anhydrous, also known as trimethylglycine or simply TMG, is an amino acid type vitamin that is found in plants like sugar beets (which is where its name is derived). It is also made in the human body and is involved in liver function, cellular reproduction, and even helping the body to make carnitine. However, its main function is to lower levels of homocysteine, another amino acid. Research also suggests that this supplement may be even more effective when taken in combination with choline, vitamin B12, and folic acid. Natural food sources include beets, broccoli, grains, shellfish, and spinach.

Betaine Anhydrous (TMG) Supplement Benefits

There are many TMG supplement benefits. The primary benefit of betaine is the reduction of homocysteine levels within the body. Homocysteine is a potentially toxic substance that is often created during the process of meat digestion. This toxicity is even thought by many researchers to contribute to joint problems, cardiovascular issues, and even skeletal deformities. Betaine Anhydrous is also a potential help to people suffering from inherited amino acid disorders which cause the body to produce too much homocysteine.

Betaine benefits intestinal function and a number of other bodily processes. The supplement aids in cell production and may help to protect the kidneys and liver. There is also some evidence to suggest that it helps to protect DNA and DNA formation.

Studies on animals also indicate that Betaine Anhydrous may even have lipotropic effects, helping to promote fat loss through the oxidation of lipids. Along the same lines, it has been known to improve digestive efficiency and possibly also lead to increased lean mass production.

  • Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine (TMG), is a modified version of the amino acid glycine.
  • Betaine supplementation has been suggested in clinical studies to improve muscle strength and power production, increase the number of reps done with a given weight, and improve endurance.*
  • University of Connecticut researchers reported that supplementing with 1.25 grams of betaine twice per day for two weeks increased bench press power by 20 percent and muscle force on the bench press by 25 percent.*
  • Betaine has also been shown to significantly increase protein synthesis following workouts as compared to a placebo. This can help lead to greater muscle growth in the long term.*
